How the PIP points system works

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) helps with the extra costs of a long-term health condition or disability. Unlike the old Disability Living Allowance, PIP is not based on a diagnosis — it is based on how your condition affects your ability to carry out a fixed list of everyday activities. There are two separate components: daily living and mobility. Each is scored using descriptors that carry points, and the totals decide whether you get nothing, the standard rate, or the enhanced rate. Because the two components are judged independently, it is entirely possible to qualify for one and not the other.

    💡 Quick answer

In each component you need 8 points for the standard rate and 12 points for the enhanced rate. Score them separately — your daily living and mobility totals never combine.

    The daily living activities

The daily living component covers ten activities: preparing food, taking nutrition, managing therapy or monitoring a health condition, washing and bathing, managing toilet needs, dressing and undressing, communicating verbally, reading, engaging with other people, and making budgeting decisions. For each one you choose the descriptor that best reflects your ability on the majority of days. A key principle the DWP uses is "reliably" — you only count as able to do an activity if you can do it safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and in a reasonable time. Needing an aid or appliance, supervision, or another person's help all attract points even if you can technically complete the task.

PIP points thresholds 0–7: none 8–11: standard 12+: enhanced Points add up across activities 8 = standard rate · 12 = enhanced rate

    The mobility activities

The mobility component has just two activities, but they carry significant weight. The first, planning and following a journey, looks at whether you can work out and follow a route, including the effect of psychological distress, disorientation or anxiety — not only physical barriers. The second, moving around, measures how far you can walk: scoring rises sharply as the distance you can manage reliably falls, with someone who can move no more than 20 metres scoring the full 12 points and reaching the enhanced rate on that activity alone.

What the rates are worth in 2025/26

For 2025/26 the daily living component pays £73.90 a week at the standard rate and £110.40 at the enhanced rate. The mobility component pays £29.20 standard and £77.05 enhanced. PIP is tax-free, is not means-tested, and does not depend on your National Insurance record, so you can receive it whether you are in work or not. An enhanced mobility award can also be exchanged for a vehicle through the Motability Scheme.

    Frequently asked questions

How many points do I need for PIP?

You need at least 8 points in a component for the standard rate and 12 points for the enhanced rate. Daily living and mobility are scored separately.

How much is PIP in 2025/26?

The daily living component is £73.90 a week at the standard rate and £110.40 at the enhanced rate. The mobility component is £29.20 standard and £77.05 enhanced.

    How are PIP points scored?

Each activity has descriptors worth between 0 and 12 points. You score the descriptor that best matches your ability for the majority of days, and the points across all activities in a component are added together.

Can I get both daily living and mobility components?

Yes. The two components are assessed independently, so you can receive either one on its own or both together at standard or enhanced rates.

Does this PIP calculator give an official decision?

No. It is an estimate to help you understand the points system. Your award is decided by the DWP after a health assessment based on your own evidence.
