Who can claim Attendance Allowance
Attendance Allowance helps with the extra costs of a long-term illness or disability if you are over State Pension age (currently 66). It is for people who need help with personal care — such as washing, dressing or eating — or supervision to stay safe, even if you do not currently get that help. There are two rates depending on whether you need help in the day, the night, or both.
Attendance Allowance is £73.90 a week at the lower rate (help by day OR night) and £110.40 a week at the higher rate (help day AND night, or if terminally ill) in 2025/26. It is tax-free and not affected by your income or savings.

It can boost other benefits
Attendance Allowance is not means-tested, so it never reduces other support. In fact, an award can increase your Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction by unlocking a severe disability addition. It can also help a relative or friend who looks after you qualify for Carer's Allowance. If you are under State Pension age, you would claim PIP instead.
