How council tax bands work
Council tax is a local charge that funds services like bin collection, social care, schools and policing. In England, every home is placed in one of eight valuation bands (A to H) based on what it would have been worth on 1 April 1991. The band sets a fixed multiplier of your council's Band D rate, so once you know your band and your local Band D charge, you can work out the bill exactly.
Band D is the benchmark. The 2025/26 average Band D council tax in England is around £2,280 a year. Lower bands pay a fraction of this; higher bands pay more — Band H pays exactly twice the Band D rate.

Council tax discounts and exemptions
You can pay less than the full bill in several situations:
- Single person discount (25%) — if you are the only adult living in the property.
- Students — full-time students are usually disregarded, and an all-student household is exempt.
- Severe mental impairment and certain carers can be disregarded.
- Council Tax Reduction — a means-tested scheme run by your council for people on low incomes or benefits.
You can find your exact band and the precise charge for your postcode on GOV.UK, and apply for discounts directly through your local council.
Frequently asked questions
How is council tax calculated?
Your home is given a band (A–H) based on its 1991 value. Each band is a fixed proportion of your council's Band D rate, so your bill = Band D rate × band multiplier, minus any discounts.
What is the average council tax bill in England for 2025/26?
The average Band D council tax in England for 2025/26 is around £2,280 a year. Most people pay this Band D figure multiplied by their own band's proportion.
How much is the single person council tax discount?
If you are the only adult living in your home, you get a 25% discount off your council tax bill. Apply through your local council.
Can I pay council tax over 12 months instead of 10?
Yes. Council tax is normally billed over 10 monthly instalments, but you have a legal right to ask your council to spread it over 12 months to lower each payment.
How do I find my council tax band?
Enter your postcode on the GOV.UK council tax band checker, or look at a recent bill. If you think your band is wrong you can ask the Valuation Office Agency to review it.
