Who gets the National Living Wage?

The higher National Living Wage applies to all workers aged 21 and over. The apprentice rate applies to apprentices under 19, or those over 19 in the first year of their apprenticeship — after that they move to the rate for their age. If you are paid less than the legal minimum for your age, your employer is breaking the law and you can report it to HMRC.

Minimum wage and your take-home pay

The figures here are gross. Income tax and National Insurance only start once your earnings pass the relevant thresholds, so many minimum-wage workers keep most of their pay. To convert any rate into a yearly salary, use our hourly wage calculator; for extra shifts see our overtime pay calculator. You may also be able to top up low pay with Universal Credit.
