How NHS dental charges work in England

NHS dentistry in England uses a simple three-band system. Whatever treatment you have, the cost falls into one of three bands, and you pay a single charge for a complete course of treatment — not per appointment. If a course needs several visits, you still only pay once.

    💡 Quick answer

A check-up is Band 1 (£27.40). Fillings and extractions are Band 2 (£75.30). Crowns, dentures and bridges are Band 3 (£326.70). You pay only the highest band you need — a check-up plus a filling is one £75.30 charge, not £27.40 + £75.30.

    Free repeat treatment

If you need more dental work within two months of finishing a course — for example, another filling — it's usually free, provided it's at the same band or lower than the one you've already paid for. That stops you being charged twice for related work in a short space of time.

Who pays nothing? NHS dental treatment is free if you're under 18 (or under 19 in full-time education), pregnant or had a baby in the last year, or receive certain benefits — including Universal Credit with low earnings, Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, or with a valid HC2 certificate.

England, Scotland, Wales and NI differ

These bands and prices apply in England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own NHS dental charges and exemption rules. Wherever you are, ask the practice to confirm the band and cost before treatment starts. Full guidance is on the NHS website.

"The thing most people miss is that a course of treatment is one charge at the highest band — so a check-up plus a crown is £326.70, not the sum of all three bands. Knowing that helps you budget and avoid surprises at the desk."
