A guide only. Providers set their own prices and rise rules — Ofcom now requires new contracts to state any rise in pounds. See Ofcom — phones and broadband.
Why the headline price isn't the real price
A £25-a-month broadband deal rarely costs £25 a month for two years. Most contracts include a mid-contract price rise each spring, and many add a setup or router fee. To compare offers fairly you need the total cost over the whole contract — then subtract any cashback or bill credit. This calculator does exactly that, so a slightly dearer deal with no rise can be revealed as the cheaper one.
Average UK broadband runs about £27–£30 a month for standard fibre. A £27.99 deal over 24 months with a 3.9% April rise is around £690 in total, not £672 — and out-of-contract prices are usually much higher, so it pays to switch when your deal ends.
What pushes the cost up
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Mid-contract price rise | Adds a few percent each April |
| Setup / activation fee | One-off, often £0–£35 |
| Router fee | One-off or built into setup |
| Cashback / bill credit | Reduces total cost |
| Out-of-contract price | Usually much higher — switch or haggle |

Frequently asked questions
What is the average cost of broadband in the UK?
Average UK broadband sits around £27 to £30 a month for a standard fibre package, though headline deals can be lower and full-fibre or bundled TV packages higher. Always check for a mid-contract price rise and the out-of-contract price.
How do mid-contract price rises work?
Many providers used to raise prices each April by inflation plus around 3.9%. From 2025, Ofcom requires new contracts to show any rise as a fixed pounds-and-pence amount upfront. This calculator lets you add a percentage or fixed rise to see its real effect.
How is the true cost of broadband calculated?
Multiply the monthly price by the number of months at each price level, add any one-off setup or router fee, and subtract any cashback or bill credit. This calculator does that across the full contract so you can compare two deals fairly.
Should I leave when my broadband contract ends?
Often yes. Out-of-contract prices are usually much higher than new-customer deals, so it pays to compare and switch or haggle when your contract ends. Add your provider's out-of-contract price here to see the gap.
Is the cheapest monthly price always the best deal?
No. A low headline price with a big setup fee or a steep mid-contract rise can cost more overall than a slightly higher price with no extras. Comparing the total contract cost — as this tool does — is the fairest way to judge.
